Back From Holiday

We apologise for the long period of inactivity.

Booker T needs to go on holiday too. *spina-Rooney*

But we're back, with a flurry of updates today. After the dust settled on the latest bumper crop of fixtures, we see Elly and Buggy climbing into joint first with Kheva making a spectacular tumble down the table. Perhaps it was the expose that was written about him in my last post. Someone whom has been hiding just under radar level, but has chosen this time to make his military-style attack is BG Yeo. An equally spectacular rise up the table, as Kheva's slide, BG jumps into second spot.

Comments on the games I managed to catch:

Brazil looked like a stuttering machine. Playing at 3/4 pace, they seemed to struggle to get into top gear, even against the Aussies. The Socceroos defended stoutly and closed down the spaces. But one just gets the feeling that Brazil seem to be languishing on their reputation. Will they manage to get themselves up for more reputable opponents in the knockout stages? Would they find their swagger against someone like Holland or Argentina?

Speaking of Argentina, my pick to lift this World Cup seems to be coming good. Hammering 6 past a clueless Serbia & Montenegro. Perhaps the poor Serbs had half their mind on the political instability back home. After all, Serbia and Montenegro are now seperate states. This will probably be the last time we see this team competeing under the same flag. This probably doesn't bode well for soccer in the Eastern Eurpoean bloc as these players will now have to split their talents up into smaller nations. Case in point is Russia and Ukraine. Imagine Sheva in the Russian team. Interesting thought eh?

Tonight's matches look like snoorers.

Hi yes, bookies need a break too hee...in any case I am just so thrilled with Korea's performance last nite!! They had better shots this time round and their performance was more consistent. I was so glad I was able to wake up to watch the match and it was a real thriller to me...especially when Park scored in the 81st minute!! I couldnt believe it! hee...Korea looks set to enter the last 16...and I will catch every match of theirs till they fade out of the competition.

Match between France and Korea just makes me realise few things - 1) Korea's strong fighting spirit - fight till the end and never say die. The Korean fans were simply ecstatic and were singing and drumming all the way to cheer their team on. It was as though Korea was the leading team! 2) French are just sore losers and they practically lack sportmanship. What with Zidane's and Gallas's reaction after Park scored. The French were simply furious the Koreans managed to snatch a goal from them. Catch Gallas's reaction. Well, perhaps individuals behave differently, but I certainly dont see that v often in the WC 2006 so far =p So, now I just erase the Italians (always arrogant and will never forget Totti's spitting) and the French from my list, permanently. Hey, soccer should be played fairly and players should exhibit good sportsmanship behaviour, that's what I feel.

To be frank, I never hide my dislike for the way the Korean team played. Maybe I just dislike Ahn for his lack of actual contribution vs his overhyped popularity. They play hard, yes, and Park is good. He is the only player I rate, and the fact I rate him highly means I'm not really biased. Also, the fact that they did not win when the opponents have 11 players on the field supports what I wrote earlier about their standards. PLUS, mr Dickie Advocat "for boring football"...They have to beat a good team with 11 men...France did badly but you can't say they are not sporting when they actually have a goal disallowed. I don't expect anyone to remain calm after trying so hard. I remember Sir Bobby saying, "If he has no passion for football, he is not a good football player". The key now for them is to beat the Swiss, cause the Swiss is the team to win this group

Hi, yes I think we can look at it in different ways. Passionate players do tend to behave in this way. Rooney has toned down more now. Ahn is over-rated cos people see him more as a star idol.

Glad you realised. The Zidane tackle is overhyped. He slipped in fact. A lot of players kick the ball away like Gallas did. Well, you should remember that the Korean fans always cheered like they won the WC when an opponent got sent off. Fair? Anyway, the only way for Korea to prove their worth is to beat the Swiss. No point scoring against a "butter finger" Barthez. And if they can defend against Frei, then their defence is good. Park is good, like I always said, but the rest are...so-so

I've always had a distaste for unsportsmanlike conduct. However, this aspect is becoming more and more a part of the modern game.

Pressuring the referee, simulation, attempting to get the opponent sent off, exploiting a weakened or injured player. These are all part and parcel of the game today.

The stakes and money have never been higher in football today.

Do I condone it? No. Of course not.

Do I accept it? Sadly and reluctantly, yes.

I simply appreciate the teams or players who exhibit the slowly-disappearing quality of honour and dignity.
